So here’s the first real podcast of 2012 and I am really happy with the selection of music on the show! The Best Of 2011 special allowed me a bit of breathing space so I had 2 months worth of promos to choose from which was nice – although I have since remembered a few notable omissions (like the new Gerry Read EP on Delsin how could I forget that?). Happy New Year everybody! After much mirth and merriment in December and the most epic New Years Eve I have ever experienced (the Berlin ‘don’t forget to go home’ cliche is still ringing in my head), I am pleased/relieved to present to you my own personal take on some of the amazing music which was released in 2011. You know the deal by now. I try not to play the hyped big name stuff. What’s the point? You will have read about it already in the press lists. So this podcast is about representing people who I think make music which deserves more praise and profile.

Downtempo stuff was equally as strong as dancefloor stuff last year, so the first half hour of the show is devoted mainly to some of my favourite folky, soulful woozy numbers. There has been some great club music released this year of course, so I tried to include some of the lesser known numbers which have worked for me this year.

I can’t think of much more to say really apart from MASSIVE thanks to everyone who sent me great music to play last year. Respect to the producers and labels who are pushing things forward. On a purely personal level, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who listened to the radio show, downloaded and shared the podcast, bought one of my records, booked me to DJ, came to see me in a club and spent time with me while I was on my travels.

There were so many highlights last year. My first trip to Australia, returning to Japan, finally visiting Russia (twice), being made so welcome when I moved to Berlin, completely re-designing my life, releasing records which I was proud of, playing some of the coolest underground parties I have ever experienced….

Coins 001 – Ron Basejam/Wave Machines Hot Coins Remix Twelve Clips by Red Rack’em

So at long last here’s the Hot Coins remixes of ‘Voices’ by Ron Basejam (aka Crazy P keyboard maestro Jim Baron) and ‘Greatest Escape We Ever Made’ by Wave Machines (Liverpudlian alt pop gurus). Neither have been available on vinyl before but fortunately the artists were happy for a limited white label style record to ‘appear’ in the shops. Both tracks were mixed in rural Austria during the Hot Coins album mixing sessions on the original SSL 4000 B Series desk from Londons Townhouse studios. PiLs Metal Box album and ‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins were both mixed on this very desk and I think the sound is a real step up from previous Hot Coins releases. DJ support comes from a wide range of jocks including Tim Sweeney, Axel Boman, Jazzanova, Catz and Dogz and Ashley Beedle

The remix EP is available to buy at Juno, Phonica, Boomkat, Decks and plenty of other places across the globe.

2012 will see the release of the debut Hot Coins album (provisionally titled ‘Geek Emotions’) so this release is a little taste of what’s yet to come.

I am really pleased to be returning to Budapest this Saturday 17/12/11 to join my old friends Crimson and Chrom and a whole host of other DJs at their new collective style night ‘The Gathering’. I have played in Budapest many times at venues such as Suss Fel Nap (RIP), A38, Mono and Merlin and it’s a city and scene that’s close to my heart. So I am excited to be returning there. This time I will be playing at a new venue called Doboz and I believe it’s free entry too.

Room 2 @ Soju Bar, Berlin 01/12/11

Hey folks just to say I am playing at Soju Bar in Berlin on Thursday night all night long. It’s a dress rehearsal for a new night I am starting next year called Room 2 which will give well known dancefloor DJs the opportunity to dig a bit deeper into their collections.

I will be playing all things non house and techno but with the emphasis on the dancefloor from 11pm on Thursday night.

Ramp Records Takeover @ Fabric, London 02/12/11

I will be playing at Fabric for the first time on Friday for Ramp Recordings alongside Scratcha DVA, Shortstuff and Gerry Read who’s playing back to back with label boss Tom Kerridge. I am releasing a single on Ramp in the new year (Chirpsin/All Alone) and I will be working on the next Red Rack’em album over the next few months which is also going to come out on Ramp.

Loftus Hall, Berlin 19/11/11

I am playing at Loftus Hall in Berlin tonight. I was there on a fact finding mission last Friday and I danced my socks off to Giles Smith, Efdemin and the Fruhschoppen guys. I had the best time of my life so I am really excited to be playing there tonight. Loftus hall is an East Berlin football teams clubhouse which is set in its own private grounds. A really magical place which has hardly been used since the 70s. It’s proving to be Berlins most popular new venue right now due to its unique nature combined with the perfect Kreuzkolln location. Nothing like popping out for some fresh air at 9am during the most intense club session I have experienced since I moved here and being faced with deserted football pitches and running tracks.
