After a short break in Croatia, Smugglers Inn Radio is back with a bloody ace guestmix from the Kelly Twins who hail from Plymouth and are electro boogie masters.

I first heard of the Kelly Twins when Bristol edit head Sell By Dave (of Bedmo Disco) put me onto their fricking top drawer ‘Don’t Smoke Crack’ live electro mix. After much searching I found the link too – check it out HERE.

They promote their own ace clubnight UFO and also run Best Before with Sell By Dave and are often described as ‘robots’ on the decks due to their intense skills and stamina.

Here’s what Sean and Dan have to say about their sound.

The rest of the show has shedloads of new stuff as I didn’t do a show on the 7th as I was in Croatia for the Garden Festival.

So expect to hear plenty of new stuff which I roadtested over there including the new Lone on his Magic Wire label, MASSIVE new heat from Office Gossip, SEVERE newness from Funkineven on the acid tip, more Eglo heat from Arp 101. Loads more but not got my hard drive to hand and my memory is poor.

Smugglers Inn Live Mix Special Tonight

I am on holiday at my parents house in Scotland so I am taking a break from the usual format.

This show will be the recording of my DJ set at Freestyle at the Bulls Head in Moseley from the 24th April 2010. The set is 1.5 hours long so I will play half an hour from another set at the end. Probably from when I played with Move D in 2007 or something.

So no talking. Just music. For 2 hours.

Normal service will be resumed in a fortnight.

Nottingham techno label See The Road are one of my top tips for 2010, so it’s great to get a guestmix from them for this show. They are about to release the long awaited Pondora EP (out on digital on March 22nd) which you may remember from my best of 2009 show) and believe me, they have plenty more quality underground techno tracks to release over the coming months.

See The Road consists of label boss and DJ Ally Reilly and Producer and DJ Mark Jacobs (with occasional collaborator John Gilbert contributing to the first EP too). Tonights Smugglers Inn show feature the first guestmix of 2010 from a true pioneer of UK experimental music – Geoff Research.

Geoff is the mastermind behind several projects which have featured on the show in the past. Research is his post punk, industrial, jazzfunk, punk funk project who recorded several mindblowing albums in the early 80’s. The music has actually improved with age and has been re-released recently on several uber cool labels including Rong/DFA and Bearfunk.

Geoff has also recorded a fair bit of experimental dance music under the name Tek San and he’s currently setting up his own label Peak Of Normal (I featured the first release Sensation/Asleep At The Wheel on recent shows) and remixing punk funk heavyweights Liquid Liquid.

It’s January. I am feeling pretty slow. So I am digging in the vaults for tonights show. It’s going to be a DJ mix special. So it’s 2 hours of pure music. No Talking. No Jingles.

I am going to play 2 DJ mixes tonight which were both recorded live. One in the studio of the UK hip hop group Elementz and one last year from the Big Chill.

The first mix is a hip hop mix that I did for Dieslers radio show on Samurai FM in 2005 (I think!) – it features loads of stuff from the then emerging wonky sound – Sa Ra, Dilla, Spacek, Just One, Red Rack’em (lol), Red Nose Distrikt, Dabrye. And then mutates into early dusbtep (yes I liked dubstep in 2005).

The second mix was recorded last year at the Big Chill at the Frisky Bison stage. It’s been available to stream from the Red Bull site but this is the first time it’s been broadcasted on the Smugglers Inn. I still have the second half of this set kicking around somewhere so that may see the light of day sometime soon.

The Big Chill set contains tracks by Solid State, Theo Parrish, MCDE, Simbad, Leandre and many more.

Smugglers Inn Best Of 2009 3 hour special Wed 23rd Dec

So 2009 is over. And what a great year for music it has been. So many artists have come of age this year and produced stellar work. We have seen the emergence of some great new names and some fine composition from some more established artists too.

I have been trawling through my hard drive to find the hottest tunes of the year. BUT there will be some notable exceptions. I don’t see the point in playing certain tunes AGAIN as they have been overplayed already. So you might be hearing the lesser known B side from a well known EP or something a little less known from an artist of note from 2009.

I am also going to play quite a lot of tracks which have worked for me while playing out this year. So it’s by no means going to be an obvious selection I hope.

I have really enjoyed 2009 and I hope the radio show has reflected that. I just want to thank everyone who has tuned in, downloaded the podcast, bought a record, contributed a guestmix, come to a gig or sent in music to play out. It’s been great to build up a lovely bunch of listeners and contributors and hopefully push some more left of center music out there…

So what’s going to be in the show then?

After many months of playing the latest mp3 digi promos and cdrs, I often look at the thousands of records in my house and wonder what I am going to do with them all. Sadly, I don’t have much time to just sit and listen to records any more and I don’t play many downtempo or experimental gigs these days.

So tonight on the Smugglers Inn I am going to devote the whole show to my collection of records and do some serious digging and play whatever takes my fancy. I have pulled out a few bits to get me started so you might be hearing tracks by The Breakfast Band, Cluster, Lee Perry, J Live, Miami, Jan Hammer, Lone, Ramp, DAF, Madlib… but then again it might not go like that at all..

So be sure to tune in tonight if you want to hear a slightly more skewed selection. And who knows, if it goes well I might be doing it a bit more often…

Smugglers Inn Radio returns to the digital airwaves tonight crammed full of new music from the likes of Greg Wilson, Domu, Bottin, Telepathe, Debruit, Forces of Nature, Time and Space Machine, Cuckoo Clocks, Soiree, Leandre and many more..

Best of all though there’s a cracking Electro/Italo guestmix from one half of Heartbreak Ali Renault which features tracks by John Carpenter, Electrick Dragon, Shake, Randy Barracuda and loads more ace stuff.

Ali is one half of Italo Pop duo Heartbreak who have conquered many a teenage girls heart as part of the recent NME Radar tour as well as releasing a massively acclaimed Lies album on Lex which has led to them performing all over the world. I was lucky enough to catch them in the Guardian lounge this year at Glastonbury and I was blown away by the power of the music and their delivery of the punchy synth heavy stompers.

Ali is a very busy guy though so he’s also been producing music for Andy Blakes Uber cool Dissident label, putting together a new EP for the acclaimed Moustache Records, co-running the Magic Waves Italo label and festival and also helping to run the tougher Cyber Dance and Human Sheild imprints. Plus playing quite a few tasty international DJ gigs to boot.

After hearing the fantastic new Flemming Dallum compilation forthcoming on Magic Waves (more info here- http://www.headsdown.org/?p=442) I asked Ali to put together a mix of quality Italo and Electro and he certainly delivered. It’s great to get something really specialist on the show so massive thanks to Ali for doing such a dope mix!
