For the first Smugglers Inn show in March I am proud to feature the first guestmix of 2010 from a true pioneer of UK experimental music – Geoff Research.
Geoff is the mastermind behind several projects which have featured on the show in the past. Research is his post punk, industrial, jazzfunk, punk funk project who recorded several mindblowing albums in the early 80’s. The music has actually improved with age and has been re-released recently on several uber cool labels including Rong/DFA and Bearfunk.
Geoff has also recorded a fair bit of experimental dance music under the name Tek San and he’s currently setting up his own label Peak Of Normal (I featured the first release Sensation/Asleep At The Wheel on recent shows) and remixing punk funk heavyweights Liquid Liquid.
More info on Geoff can be found HERE.
The rest of the show contains plenty of new stuff from the likes of Aloe Blacc, Altered Natives, Roska, Erdbeerschnitzel, Atjazz and Si Tew, Al Kent, Semtek a preview of my next single, plus loads loads more..

I have got track on the new Brownswood/FYE compilation ‘We Made This’, which is made up entirely of tracks produced by users of the Brownswood message board. There’s some ace stuff on the album including tracks from Mr Beatnick, Jimi Oh, Bergs, Deep Space Orchestra, Surra and Clause 4.
As it’s a non profit exercise the comp is available for only £4.99 which is a bargain considering the quality of the music and artwork. It’s all exclusive material too. Soon to be a collectors item!
It’s available at Juno and Piccadilly so far….

Well it’s been probably my most long awaited release since the Joubert Singers remix (which came out about this time last year). Don’t ask me why it’s taken so long but it’s finally here. Gilles Peterson played In Love Again on Radio 1 way back in September 2009 and since then I have had so many people contacting me asking when it’s coming out and some even asking to buy an mp3 off me!
Anyway, it’s a 3 track EP of beatdown house which I think is fairly banging despite all of the tracks being below 110bpm.
It’s available to buy from Juno and Phonica who very kindly made it one of their records of the week. It should be in Piccadilly by the weekend for all people of a Northern persuasion.
Soundclips are below.

I have finally managed to upload some tracks onto Soundcloud. So if you want to hear most of my back catalogue and some new stuff too please go to http://soundcloud.com/red-rackem to check out some tunes in their glorious waveform displays.
I must say I am really enjoying how easy it is to share music with people on Soundcloud, it does seem a lot nicer than just sending people download links.

For this latest show I was joined by ex Keep On scribe and Cosmic Slop member Mike Greenwell for a vinyl only trawl through the old school. Mike was co-presented the new wave special I did a couple of years ago and he is one of the people behind the new ultra underground invite only Cosmic Slop parties which are taking place sporadically in Leeds. You can check out a mix from their 2009 New Years Eve party HERE and if you want more info about their parties then please get in touch with them on this email – cosmicslop113[at]googlemail.com
We tried to break the show up into 2 halves with the first half focusing on live music (played on instruments) and the second half representing some more electronic sounds. As ever the lines are a bit blurred in places! We played 2 tracks each throughout the show. I played the first 2 tracks if you want to work out who played what.

Smugglers Inn London Excursion @ Vibe Bar, Trueman Brewery, Brick Lane, London
Friday 12th Feb, 8pm-1am, Free Entry.
My monthly London residency continues with the return of the DJs DJ Louis Finch.
Louis Finch
Louis is one of those rare DJs who prefers to let his blinding selection and skills do the talking. As a resident at the infamous Boogiejuice night in north yorkshire hippy haven Hebden Bridge he regularly gave guests like Derrick Carter, Andrew Weatherall and Chris Duckenfield a run for their money behind the decks. Nowadays he tends to avoid the spotlight so I am really pleased that I have persuaded him to play at this event.
Plus Resident DJ – Red Rack’em -Tirk/Untracked/Hometaping
Danny Berman aka Red Rack’em is working on several musical projects including Hot Coins (disco/house), Marlinspike (Detroit techno 2 step) and Red Rack’em (wonky hip hop and beatdown house). He produces music for quite a few respected labels including Tirk, Untracked, Home Taping Is Killing Music, Society, Soft Rocks, Undertones, Autodiscoteque and Deep Freeze and has also remixed a few well known artists including Tricky for Domino Records. As a DJ, Danny plays many different types of music around the UK and in Europe and he also produces and presents his own radio show The Smugglers Inn.
Rack’em will be joined each month by respected DJs and producers from various scenes. Expect to hear the finest hip-hop, disco, cosmic, elctro, punk funk, proper house, broken beat, jazz, funk and wonky beats.

Red Rack’em – NIght Shift EP – Out Now On Undertones
After yet more delays to the Untracked EP (out at the end of the month now), I am pleased to say the Night Shift EP has actually been released ahead of schedule. That is pretty much unheard of in the record game! Anyway this is my first record on a non UK label as it’s been released on Undertones, which is an offshoot of the Detroit house label Kolour. It’s also my most housey release to date and contains 3 pretty different tracks which loosely fall into 3 different catagories.
The whole EP is based around working late, be it on music, in a factory or driving a bus. Title track ‘Night Shift’ is a spooky deep house track which was influenced by the first Batman movie believe it or not. I was trying to recreate the gothic feel of that movie with dissonant chords and dark atmospherics. The first track on the B side is called ‘Overtime’ and is of course an ode to putting in those extra hours. It’s fairly banging in a kind of big room-yet deep way and its my first ever techno track that’s been released too which is nice. The final track Late One is weird mutant funked up squelchy house with some seriously french hi hats in it.
Red Rack’em ‘Nighshift’ by Red Rack’em
Red Rack’em ‘Overtime’ by Red Rack’em
Red Rack’em ‘Late One’ by Red Rack’em
DJ support comes from some pretty varied corners including Laurent Garnier, Dixon, Osunlade, Harri, Nick Warren, Deepchild, Slam, Fabrice Lig, Mark Farina, Danny Tenaglia etc…
If you want to pick up a copy, it’s in Juno and Phonica

Smugglers Inn Radio Live Tonight @ http://www.myhouse-yourhouse.net from 7-9pm GMT
Tonights show will be another vinyl only special and it’s co-presented by former Keep On scribe and all round collector guru Mike Greenwell, who will be playing the whole show with me and giving us some info about an exciting new project he’s involved with in Leeds called Cosmic Slop.
Those of you with decent memories may remember the 3 hour new wave special that Mike co-presented with me a couple of years ago (it’s available HERE )
Well tonights show is going to focus on live music for the first hour so expect a healthy dose of funk, reggae, afrobeat, jazz and disco. The second hour will be devoted to electronic stuff of the experimental proto dance music kind. It will be 2 tracks each and then swap for the whole show.
There will be no plan! So expect plenty of curveballs.

I will be joining Morgan Zarate from Spacek, Soundspecies and the CDR family in Birmingham on Thursday for a Logic based CDR production workshop. I have been asked to show how I made one of my standout tracks so I am going to look at my remix of ‘Stand On The Word’ by the Joubert Singers and show how I produced it.
If you’re based near Birmingham and fancy coming along to the session it’s held at Ikon Gallery, 1 Oozells Square, Brindleyplace, Birmingham. There will be tracks being made on the night and the opportunity to have a go with Logic 9 if you’re thinking of getting into production.
It’s free and is on from 7-10pm. Here’s a video from the last event which featured Bullion, Simbad and Floating Points.

PLEASE NOTE – ALL PODCASTS ARE ON THE HOME PAGE OR IN THE ARCHIVE SECTION – SCROLL DOWN TO FIND THEM – LOOK FOR THE AUDIO PLAYER IN THE POSTS

Bit of a different Smugglers Inn this time. I have dug into the vaults for a couple of DJ mixes which haven’t been available for download before. The first mix was done in 2006 for Dieslers show on Samurai FM and features a healthy dose of the then emerging wonky hip hop sound with tracks from the likes of Rednose, Dilla, Spacek, Danny Breaks, Just One and even some hip hop from me (haven’t made a hip hop tune for well over a year!). The mix mutates into more uptempo stuff and ends up in dubstep territory – it was 2006 remember – I still went out in those days!
The second mix is the first hour of my set from the Big Chill. Not the radio station set which is on their site – this is the set I played in the evening on the Frisky Bison stage. The second hour is still languishing in my hard drive so look out for that in a few weeks. I started off on a bit of a disco tip with tracks by Solid State and Linkwood before heading off into house and garage territory with tracks by Theo Parrish, MCDE and Zed Bias.
Next weeks radio show will be business as usual with loads of brand new stuff but in the meantime here’s 2 hours of music with no links or jingles in sight.
Both these mixes are an hour long btw – it may look a bit mad having 53 tracks in 2 hours but it works. Honest.

Smugglers Inn Radio DJ Mix Special Tonight – 7 til 9pm GMT @ http://www.myhouse-yourhouse.net
It’s January. I am feeling pretty slow. So I am digging in the vaults for tonights show. It’s going to be a DJ mix special. So it’s 2 hours of pure music. No Talking. No Jingles.
I am going to play 2 DJ mixes tonight which were both recorded live. One in the studio of the UK hip hop group Elementz and one last year from the Big Chill.
The first mix is a hip hop mix that I did for Dieslers radio show on Samurai FM in 2005 (I think!) – it features loads of stuff from the then emerging wonky sound – Sa Ra, Dilla, Spacek, Just One, Red Rack’em (lol), Red Nose Distrikt, Dabrye. And then mutates into early dusbtep (yes I liked dubstep in 2005).
The second mix was recorded last year at the Big Chill at the Frisky Bison stage. It’s been available to stream from the Red Bull site but this is the first time it’s been broadcasted on the Smugglers Inn. I still have the second half of this set kicking around somewhere so that may see the light of day sometime soon.
The Big Chill set contains tracks by Solid State, Theo Parrish, MCDE, Simbad, Leandre and many more.

Firstly I would like to say a MASSIVE Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone, wherever you are. This years final Smuggler Inn podcast is a 3 hour retrospective of just some of the great music which was released in 2009. It’s by no means exhaustive but it does represent a pretty even sweep through each month of the year. I tried to choose tracks which had either performed well in club sets over the last year or tracks which were musically deep and stand up to repeated listening. I have been really impressed with the depth and musicality of the stuff coming through this year and I hope this is reflected in the choices for this show. I didn’t just want to put all the big stuff in so there’s a few notable exceptions – but you can hear them in other peoples best of 2009 shows.
Massive thanks to everyone who has supported the Smugglers Inn over the last 3 years (the first show in jan will be our 3rd birthday I believe) and to all the producers – please keep the good music coming!

Smugglers Inn Best Of 2009 3 hour special Wed 23rd Dec
@ http://www.myhouse-yourhouse.net from 7-10pm GMT
So 2009 is over. And what a great year for music it has been. So many artists have come of age this year and produced stellar work. We have seen the emergence of some great new names and some fine composition from some more established artists too.
I have been trawling through my hard drive to find the hottest tunes of the year. BUT there will be some notable exceptions. I don’t see the point in playing certain tunes AGAIN as they have been overplayed already. So you might be hearing the lesser known B side from a well known EP or something a little less known from an artist of note from 2009.
I am also going to play quite a lot of tracks which have worked for me while playing out this year. So it’s by no means going to be an obvious selection I hope.
I have really enjoyed 2009 and I hope the radio show has reflected that. I just want to thank everyone who has tuned in, downloaded the podcast, bought a record, contributed a guestmix, come to a gig or sent in music to play out. It’s been great to build up a lovely bunch of listeners and contributors and hopefully push some more left of center music out there…
So what’s going to be in the show then?
Well you will have to tune in to find out.
It could be you..

Friday

On Friday 18th Dec I will be playing with the ///Shift guys at The Camp, 70-74 City Road, London, EC1Y 2BJ. I really enjoyed the last gig with them at the Horse and Groom so it’s great to be asked back to play again. Hopefully I won’t have to stay up all night this time though. It took me a while to recover from the last gig with these guys.
Full info is HERE.
Saturday

And then on Saturday I will be playing at the fantastic new house and techno night Kiss Me Again at The Bunker, 46 Deptford Broadway, SE8 4PH. The night is run by Peder Mathias Clark who writes for the extra cool music site Little White Earbuds. Previous guest have included Werk Discs boss Actress and the power behind Uzuri and Sud Electronic Lakuti so I am well looking forward to breaking out the underground house and techno for this one! You can read the glowing Resident Advisor review of the last Kiss Me Again night HERE.
