I Survived Glastonbury!

I have somehow made it back from Glastonbury in one piece. Just want to say a massive thanks to Futureboogie and all at the Igloo for booking me to play in The Igloo on Saturday night and looking after me SO WELL. I was really happy with how I played and I also really enjoyed what Futureboogie, James B, Tirk, Mystic Brew and Ed from Mixmag played during the rest of the night. I had forgotten that you could rave like that! I also had a ball in The Guardian Lounge on Sunday playing between Heartbreak (who were mindblowingly good) and Tony Christie. So a big thanks to Matt, Alex and Gavin from The Agency for booking me to play there too. Too much to tell about on here but it was defo my fave Glasto so far. Despite the toughest days travel back on Monday (even worse than Munich airport after Snowbombing) I am well up for it next year already!

I met SO many cool people at the festival and it was such a positive experience. I don’t feel so clever now though lol.

Anyways… here is the latest Smugglers Inn podcast with an amazing boogie guestmix from Leigh Lerwill who is from Leeds. There’s plenty of new stuff on the show as ever so I hope you enjoy it.

Heads Down Interview Part 1

Untracked label boss Christopher Tubbs has recently started his own video based blog called Heads Down and you can check it HERE. So far he’s interviewed the likes of Andy Blake from Dissident, Toby Tobias and Kathy Diamond and I am sure that the blog will soon assume mythical status as not many other people have got such good access to people making quality music on the underground scene.

I threw a secret party in Nottingham last week and I invited Chris up to play at it. He totally smashed it and I remember thinking ‘there’s nothing like this’ when he dropped Once In A Lifetime by Talking Heads at 5.30am with sunshine poking through the much needed curtains. But before the carnage began, Chris collared me in my back garden where we had a little chat about things. I must point out that I had already lost 2 nights sleep before the interview due to early flights to and from Paris so please excuse my slightly vague state!

Glastonbury

If anyone is off to Glastonbury this weekend I will be playing on Saturday night from 11pm-midnight in the Igloo Dance Tent in the Shangri La area with The Revenge, Dave Beer and the Futureboogie boys.

I will also be playing in the Guardian Lounge on Sunday from 6.30-7.30pm oddly sandwiched between Italo boys Heartbreak and Amarillo man Tony Christie. Please come and say hello if you are coherent!

I was in Leeds playing at the ace Mystic Brew night a month or so ago and after the club had finished I ended up at the house of Leeds record dealer and all round nice guy Leigh Lerwill for a little soiree. I quickly noticed that the music being played on his stereo was loads of wicked 80’s boogie. It turned out that he had just done a new mix entitled ‘Breakdown Boogie’. Despite being a little worse for wear I managed to bag his permission to broadcast is on the Smugglers Inn – so expect to hear part 1 tonight. The second part will be aired in a few weeks.

Elsewhere on the show we have loads of new stuff as ever..

- Private press disco stuff I picked up in Paris last week – hot, only 100 copies and not in the shops!

- The ace new Clyde single Roll Of The Beast with remixes from Atjazz, Christo and Tim Scott

- Yam Who has started a new label called IZM music – I will be playing the ace new singe from that tonight..

After last months smasherooni from Ulysses 82 and Louis Finch, it’s time for another foray darn sarf. The Smugglers Inn London Excursion returns to Vibe Bar, Trueman Brewery, Brick Lane, Shoreditch, London tonight from 8pm until 1am. It’s £4 to get in or free before 8pm.

Jakattak

This month my special guest will be Jakattak who is a highly experienced underground party DJ with an amazing collection of house, disco, soul and broken beat. No online mixes or myspaces with this guy – he’s all about the music..not the marketing.

Jak used to live in Nottingham and played at nights like Basement Boogaloo and also rocked a few Smugglers Inn parties in his time. He now lives in Leeds and has quickly established himself there as a DJ to watch. Jak is a Southport devotee so he comes from quite a soulful bumpin’ angle so I am really looking forward to hearing what he plays on Friday..

Plus Resident DJ Red Rack’em – Smugglers Inn/Tirk/Untracked etc

Nottingham DJ Danny Berman aka Red Rack’em is well known for his Hot Coins disco project, beatdown house and remixes on labels such as Tirk, Untracked and Society. His fortnightly Smugglers Inn podcasts are also very popular with lovers of upfront underground music. Look out for his rather large Hot Coins remix of Joubert Singers Stand On The Word which is out now on Tirk and also his Picnic EP which has just come out on Deep Freeze, complete with a hot Revenge remix…

Rack’em will be joined each month by respected DJs and producers from various scenes.

Expect to hear the finest hip-hop, disco, cosmic, electro, punk funk, proper house, broken beat, jazz, funk and wonky beats.

Hot Coins – You Can’t Pray For Your Soul/Christmas Day on Untracked Records Limited Repress

Due to phenomenal demand (lol), this tasty little EP of Detroit tinged fun and games has been repressed and is now languishing at Juno awaiting a new home.

For those who missed it the first time, here’s a wee recap of what the music sounds like…

‘You Can’t Pray For Your Soul’ is 96bpm deep chugging house music which contains quasi religious vocal samples and genuine Detroit vibes. The flip ‘Christmas Day’ was made from jazz CDs picked out by my dad on Christmas Day 2007. It’s an interesting track – it starts out on some kind of wonky cut up hip hop flex before mutating into dark jazzy house and ends on a deep note.

You can listen/buy the EP from Juno HERE

Futureboogie have asked me to join their very cool agency. This is great news as they represent quite a few of my musical heroes including Crazy P, Domu, Mad Mats and Atjazz. I have put together a new DJ mix for their site to commemorate this fine moment in time. As they are a pretty eclectic bunch I pretty much threw the ruddy kitchen sink in.

I have been really enjoying mashing up different genres recently again as it’s more fun to mix them I reckon. So after a disco/boogie start on here it soon slips into house/broken/afro/2 step/detroit/postpunkelectro/techno territory… the end is particularly wild – anyone for some UK garage new wave electro?

(There were some technical issues with my original post – for some reason subscribers received a copy of Barrys mix (which I linked to in the original text) instead of the show – sorry about that – but hey, it’s a good mix!)

So here’s the second May podcast and another ace guestmix. Barry Fell and Nick Yuill are 2 of the most dedicated and hard working DJs I have ever met. They reside in Edinburgh but you could transfer to any discerning dancefloor in the world and they would easily hold their own. Barry is well respected for his ace deep DJ mixes and Nick is well known in Edinburgh as the man to call when people like Theo Parrish needs a DJ partner so he’s not bad on the decks either!

As ever the show contains loads of new stuff including more ace new soul from Lee Fields, wonky french stuff from Souleance, mental Italian horror disco coming soon on Bear Funk from Bottin, more Ulysses 82 heat, new old school tinged freshness from Boogie Corporation, new Domu on the housey tip, an updated Zed Bias classic and much more…

Barry Fell and Nick Yuill are 2 stalwarts of the Scottish deep music scene and I had the pleasure of meeting them properly over the festive season pretty much straight off the plane in Edinburgh late in 2008. Within an hour we were deep into a massive Detroit music session and I immediately lodged a request for a guestmix. I have been a real fan of Barrys amazing DJ mixes for a while now and Nick has supported the likes of Theo Parrish so he’s no slouch behind the decks either. These guys have got a deep appreciation of quality music across the boards and I am really pleased to get a guestmix from them…

As ever the show will be broadcast live tonight from 7-9pm @ http://www.myhouse-yourhouse.net and the podcast will be uploaded to http://www.redrackem.com from friday or search itunes for ’smugglers inn’

So I am off on my travels again. It’s back to London on Friday 8th of May for The Smugglers Inn London Excursion with special guests Ulysses 82 and Louis Finch.

Friday 8th May Info

Music from 8pm – 1am

Smugglers Inn London Excursion @ Vibe Bar, The Trueman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, Shoreditch, London

Entry – Free before 8pm/£4 after

Ulysses 82http://www.myspace.com/ulysses82

Ulysses 82 are a secretive production team who attend a lot of events but prefer their work to remain in the shadows with CDRs being handed out to a trusted few. They make hydraulic electro boogie music and are both blinding DJs. I featured one of their tracks in my set at the worldwide awards and some notable disco DJs were soon sniffing round these guys for some of that Ulysses heat. So expect a dynamic set from these guys.

Louis Finch

Louis is one of those rare DJs who prefers to let his blinding selection and skills do the talking. As a resident at the infamous Boogiejuice night in north yorkshire hippy haven Hebden Bridge he regularly gave guests like Derrick Carter, Andrew Weatherall and Chris Duckenfield a run for their money behind the decks. Nowadays he tends to avoid the spotlight so I am really pleased that I have persuaded him to play at this event.

As ever I will be playing some tunes as well so expect the usual mixed up fare.

Entry is free before 8pm and £4 afterwards. Get in contact if you want to be put on the guestlist.

Venue info – http://www.vibe-bar.co.uk/

Then on Saturday I am off up to Leeds to play at Mystic Brew – should be an ace night! Previous guests have included Recloose, Atjazz, Bill Brewster and James Holroyd so I can play it a bit all over the place I reckon.

Saturday 9th May Info

Mystic Brew @ SMOKESTACK, Lower Briggate, Leeds
(near ryan’s vintage & wokon)
10.30pm – 3.30pm

So it’s May now… Bloody hell – where’s the year going? We haven’t had a guestmix on the Smugglers Inn for a while now so who better to call than the mighty Greg Wilson! I really enjoyed hearing Greg play a downtempo set at Snowbombing during the day at the Arctic Disco so I asked if he could oblige with a guestmix. He sent me a 120 minute set which I have split into 2 parts. Part 1 on this show and part 2 in a months time.

Apart from that there’s the usual fare of brand new hot music – brand new Domu heat, world exclusive Frank Booker follow up to Universal Drive, amazing new soul from Lee Fields and Mayor Hawthorne, shedloads from the wonky tech folk at Hand On The Plow, more Eddie C goodness, more from Solid States All Out War project etc…

Smugglers Inn Radio – Tonight- 7-9pm GMT

http://www.myhouse-yourhouse.net

Regular listeners will know there’s not been a guest mix for a while so I am pleased to say that we have one from the mighty Greg Wilson on tonights show.

I really enjoyed listening to Greg playing at the Arctic Disco during the day at Snowbombing last month so I asked him for something similar for the show and he obliged with an ace mix of slowish grooves. As it’s 120 mins long, I will be broadcasting it in 2 halves over this and the next show in a fortnights time.

We have also got the usual load of brand new stuff – it’s proper overload this week so I will prob have to play some of it in a couple of weeks..

Expect to hear tracks from…

Domu with brand new discoteque style stuff

Mega exclusive Frank Booker with the follow up to Universal Drive

More heat from Solid States forthcoming All Out War EP

Ace new disco wrongness from Son Of Sound

Ridiculous new beatdown from Kronk Family Enterprises

Next level tech folk from the Hand On The Plough stable

Forthcoming new digi funk from Boogie Corporation

New chocolate mentalism from Gary Davis

More deepness from Rick Wade

Some ace blue eyed soul from Stones Throw fave Mayor Hawthorne

The next thing on One Handed (I think) from Fulgeance..

Quality new disco/house from Das Volt

Brand new old freeform jazz electro from Research

And plenty more…..

The show should be available as a podcast here from Friday or search itunes store for ’smugglers inn’

Red Rack’em – Picnic EP – out now on Deep Freeze

I have been making a lot more house in the last couple of years and this is my first ‘official’ above 120bpm house release. Deep Freeze have been putting out a lot of disco stuff over the last couple of years but this release is kind of signaling their return to house so it’s a nice hook up all round. Also it’s a pure Scottish affair as I am from Fife, Deep Freeze is from Dundee and The Revenge is from Glesga (that’s Glasgow to you and I)…

The A side is called Picnic and it’s pretty deep – a Detroit influenced track which rolls along nicely. It kind of goes ‘doo der der’ – you will know what I mean if you check the soundclips.

First up on the B side is a remix of Picnic by none other than The Revenge – he’s hotter than the sahara right now and has turns in a really cool, deep chugger which will keep you on hold nicely.

Last up is the Gilles Peterson favourite Crowd Scene which contains live samples recorded and sourced from Detroit – oh yes – it’s defo on the beatdown tip this one with lots of cut up yelps and claps – and severe sub bass.

It’s had DJ support from Gilles Peterson, Laurent Garnier, Chris Duckenfield, Ashley Beedle, Harri, Tensnake etc..

The vinyl is available to buy at the usual outlets…

This has been kicking around on promo for a wee while now and has now finally been released on Exceptional. Tubbs from Atlantic Conveyor meets Joe Dukie from Fat Freddys Drop and is then severely dubbed out by Marlinspike with additional vocals and saxophone from Pippa Marland.

I think all those years of my dad playing me Big Youth Natty Cultural Dread payed off on this one – it’s pretty dubby and be warned – it’s a bit of a speaker masher!

Its available digitally from Itunes here – http://snipurl.com/g829w

So here is the second podcast in April and it features quite a lot of new names and first releases on fledgling labels. So it’s looking all good for the future of our music… Well for at least another year or 2 I hope! The tracks were flying in for inclusion on tue/wed so I just want to say a massive BIG UP to all the producers and labels who contributed to this show.

In this episode of The Smugglers Inn we have Solid States new venture All Out War, more wonked out house straight out of Russia from SE62, ridiculous new beatdown from Negghead, massive new hip hop from Bullion and Rekordah, Ian Dury being put in the blender by Borderliners, ace new Juju And Jordash out soon on Dekmantle, new L.E.S.S stuff from The Revenge, new electro bruk from Seiji, new electro disco from Semte, a preview of the next Hot Coins EP on Untracked and much much more…..
